If you are traveling and need to rent a car, the rental car company will likely offer you extra insurance coverage. Our clients often ask us: Should I purchase that?
In most cases, you do not need additional rental car insurance if you:
1. Have a Minnesota or Wisconsin insurance policy*
2. Are traveling within the United States or Canada
In this situation, your underlying auto and umbrella policy limits extend from your current policy.
If you are involved in an accident where there are injuries or damage incurred to the rental car it would be covered by your auto insurance. This type of accident would be classified as a liability (bodily injury or property damage) claim and would not be subject to your deductible.
As always, please contact us with any further questions or for recommendations for renting a car outside of the United States. Safe and happy travels!
*Different states have different regulations. Check with us if you have a policy in a state other than Minnesota or Wisconsin.
