Mike Sherwood, Cox Insurance client since 1995, shares the Pizza Nea story over a delicious lunch!
What was your inspiration behind opening Pizza Nea?
I used to own a bagel shop. In the evenings, I started playing around with making Neapolitan pizzas and serving them to the clientele. It was a fun concept and the pizzas were very well received… so after some time I decided to sell the bagel shop and open Pizza Nea!
What is the story behind the name?
We wanted to somehow include the word “Neapolitan” but obviously it is so long — so we just shortened it to “Nea” and the name was born.
“Nea” itself doesn’t translate to anything, but most people get it!
What is the most popular item on the menu?
For pizza, it is definitely the Salsicce, which includes spicy Italian sausage, roasted red peppers, cracked red pepper, mozzarella and basil.
The most popular salad is the Verde salad which is mixed greens, pine nuts, Parmigiano-Reggiano and Romano with a light balsamic vinaigrette dressing, topped with prosciutto.
If you had an extra hour in every business day what would you do with it?
Probably take my wife out to lunch!
What is the best advice you were ever given about being a business owner?
Always plan to have at least 25% more money than you need. AT LEAST 25%. You always need more than you expect.
Anything else should people know about Pizza Nea?
Wednesday night is date night which includes 2 drinks, 2 pizzas and a dessert to share for only $30. People love that.
Being a restaurant, what are your unique insurance exposures?
Well, we serve liquor, so that presents some unique challenges in the insurance world. We also have to have special considerations for food spoilage, fires and workers comp. The restaurant industry as a whole has highs and lows and that impacts our insurance rates.
Can you share an experience that stands out to you and demonstrates the unique working relationship we have together?
When I first started working with Cox many years ago, I appreciated that Ric came into the shop to meet me and really get to know my business. Since then, claims have always been handled very professionally and my best interests are top-of-mind.
I have also always been impressed with how much Cox Insurance gives back to the community through Soup it Up for Kids and other charitable efforts.
